Michigan vs Chicago Football Tickets
1892-1905
The rivalry between The University of Chicago and The
University of Michigan may have been the most important in the Midwest at the
end of the 19th Century and beginning of the 20th Century. Chicago
and Michigan consistently produced the best teams and dominated the Western
Conference (predecessor to the Big Ten). When Chicago cancelled
their football program in 1939, the great rivalry ended. Since
resurrecing the football program in 1969, The University of Chicago resurrected the football program in 1969,
they compete in NCAA Divsion III.

This is a sample ticket for the 1900 Chicago-Michigan game.
Of particular interest is the combination of three tickets in one: Train
fare from Ann Arbor to Chicago and back, as well as general admission to the
football game. Truly a unique specimen.

This Ticket is from Fielding Yost's first season as head
coach at Michigan. The 1901 Michigan team outscored its opponents
550-0 during the season, a scoring average of nearly a point per minute
(hence the nickname "Yost's Point A Minute Team"). This was Michigan's
first national championship team. The road to victory over Chicago and
its other 9 opponents earned Michigan the invitation to play at the first Tournament of
Roses football game on January 1, 1902.

The Wolverines completed their 1903 season with their third
straight shut-out of the Chicago Maroons. During the early years
of the 20th Century, Amos Alonzo Stagg's Maroons were a formidable foe.
The Thanksgiving Day scheduling is an indication of the magnitude of the
Chicago-Michigan rivalry. Copies of this ticket have been
frequently mis-identified since the style is similar to Michigan's home
tickets during the early years of the century.
