This was the first football game between Iowa and Michigan. Although considered a "home" game for Michigan, it was actually played in Bennett Park in Detroit. Between 1890-1901, Michigan played at least one of its games in Detroit, generally at the Detroit Athletic Club Park.

This game was played in "neutral" territory in Chicago. The Chicago vs Michigan game had been the traditional Thanksgiving day football game, but this year Iowa was slated to take on the Wolverines.
